Mother Gothel Sold Out

Looking back at my last post on buying a Limited Editon Mother Gothel doll, I realised that my New Zealand location must have allowed me to buy one of the very first dolls.

By the time I went to bed, a few hours later, they'd sold out. And there's at least 50 listings on eBay already - average price about $300, with many starting at over $400. I intend to gloat over mine... but only when I actually get her. And only in limited amounts. Starting to collect dolls (or anything, really) is a very bad expensive habit that I should not start!. Luckily I tend to dislike enough of them that I may be safe - most of the Disney ones have giant eyes, for one thing, and I am opposed to paying for something that annoys me and I consider bad design.

My Mother Gothel Squidoo Earnings Bought Me A Limited Edition Doll

I just ordered one of the Mother Gothel Limited Edition dolls. I think I'm mad. But I've been following them a while, and I'm really pleased with figuring out when they'd be on sale (March 29th, as a secret surprise for the release of Tangled) and I knew they'd sell out, so I'd never get to see one. There's only 1500 - and I estimate about 500 must have been sold in the UK, maybe? Doesn't matter really, as they sold out in a day, however many it was.

 That's the trouble with putting yourself in the mind of a buyer when researching... you end up wanting to buy things yourself! The risks I run for authenticity *dramatic sigh*. And they're very big (43 centimetres high), and they do look pretty. I feel like it's my tribute back for all the content she provided. Also, it is definitely research. Definitely. Expect photos of her turning up on my Squidoo pages! (Actually, as soon as I thought 'awesome photography subject', well... I confess that may be my main reason!).

The advantage of Paypal being that it's all still virtual to me, so I can pretend that I didn't just spend that much money on a doll. And then of course, DisneyStore.com doesn't accept overseas Paypal. Bastards. So I had to use my credit card.

But I justified it :D I think I've earnt enough from all my Mother Gothel related lenses on Squidoo to pay for it (the shipping was nasty, of course, another $55).

Wait, let me just go estimate how much Mother Gothel has actually earnt me yet and see if that makes me feel better. Oh drat, haven't been paid for any yet, but will in a couple of weeks at the next payday! (dratted 2 month delays).

Right, Mother Gothel on Squidoo earnings, for all lenses to date, and predicted for April. For all except the main lens, my first payday for all of them will be in April, so I'll estimate the first payday and the Jan-April earnings (as typically, over time is a better indicator/earning rate anyway). Tier earnings are estimates, and can vary quite a bit.

About $9-10 in Amazon associate referrals from miscellaneous Tangled stuff (the Art of Tangled, the DVD, and the toy figure set) that could have come from any of the lenses.

Mother Gothel Dolls has two months of tier 2 pending, and might make tier 1 this month with the release, but will certainly stay in tier 2 easily. So thats ~$15 or if I'm really lucky, $40 for the first three months of earning.

Mother Gothel Fan Art will start earning in April, and it looks like that might be tier 2. So either 30c or $5.

The Magic Golden Flower is the same as the fan art page, but probably won't make tier 2, so 30c.

Mother Knows Best is a pathetic tier 3, so only ever 30c. So two months pending and no improvement = 90c

The main Mother Gothel page has been around a month longer, so already earnt me $33, and stayed happily in tier 1 - so until the end of April is another ~$90.

Cosplaying Mother Gothel made it into tier 1 for February and March, and will easily stay there all April, so $90. I'll also get a few dollars (estimate of $6 from Amazon Associates for costuming-related sales, including this awesome dagger and a Lined Black-Gold Velvet Cloak)


So total pending Mother Gothel earnings (plus $33 already paid):
This coming payday: $65.30ish which covers the cost of the doll! (but not the shipping)
Jan-April, all finally paid by June:
 Worst case - ~$200
Best case ~$230


Yep.
It was worth it. And now I know what the title is. And I can't believe I could write so much about a character.

Art of Tangled Finally Available

Well, turns out the very popular artbook for the latest Disney film, The Art of Tangled was so popular that it actually sold out. But it's finally back in stock at Amazon!

I've been keeping an eye on it, because a lot of the concept art and other sketches I've been collecting for the Mother Gothel page mostly appear to be scans from this book.

How To Draw Mother Gothel

Working on this... Need to draw various steps! Obviously a lot of this is repeated from Cosplaying Mother Gothel, but the important bits for drawing are slightly different.

1. Sexy, curvy female, so include waist, hips, bust.
2. Taller than Rapunzel
3. Wide face (cartoon version), wide and prominent cheekbones
4. Eyes are pale blue, but the pupils are often very large and dark
5. Hair - curly black cloud, goes out to wider than shoulders and ends just below shoulderblades. Blue-black.
6. Fringe - about three short curly strands, just reaching eyebrows
7. Eyebrows - thin, elegant, black, curved
8. Make up - bronze eyeshadow (gold on lid, darker brown along eye socket); pink cheeks, fair skin, medium-dark pink lips
9. Hands - long, elegant, dark red nail polish and long nails
10. Earrings - inverted long gold pyramids
11. Dress - crimson, strong bright reddish colour, with brocade patterning - shiny, so probably silk
12. Dress sleeves - drapey, end just after elbows. Gold lining visible.
13. Neckline - square, scooped, cleavage showing
14. Gold embroidery - pipeline on sleeves, S loop pattern around neckline
15. Belt around waist and long strip hanging down almost to hem - through gold circle, same red as dress but no brocade, smaller version of neckline embroidery
16. Shoes not visible, or else pointy dark brown toes of shoes peeping out.
17. Big swooping black cloak - has a hood, gold link at throat and gold edging on front and around neck.

What I like about these three paintings is that not only are they 'good' art - recognisable characters, suitable colour choices, etcetera, but they all add an extra spin - Mother Gothel is doing something. They aren't just 'yet another character study/screenshot'

AMAZING OOAK Mother Gothel Doll!

I'm stunned. And delighted. And very, very impressed. I was just contacted by the creator of this amazing Mother Gothel doll, And they used my costume lens! And I get to put the pretty picture up on my lens! I can't decide which makes me happier ^_^

They customized an existing tonner doll of Bellatrix LeStrange to get this OOAK - 'one of a kind' - marvel. So far, there's only a Rapunzel doll being released officially, so this may be the only one of its kind (apart from other people's OOAKs, of course!) And considering the starting price of the tonner doll is currently $185... this darling is going to be very expensive. Pity. I want her!

And I can say that not only do I want her (and I assure you, I am very picky - especially when it comes to anything art-related... I have to watch myself at conventions, because I've got a tendency to over-criticise!), but she's almost perfect.

And this meant that I had to create yet another Mother Gothel lens. Yes. Another one. (Wait - I haven't actually mentioned on here yet, have I? Well, I made one about her song, "Mother Knows Best", earlier today as well. But they let me siphon off a bit more content from the long and busy main Mother Gothel page). And this latest one is, of course, about Mother Gothel Dolls (there's one tiny official one, the amazing OOAK one, a free paper doll, and a Madame Alexander).

Drat. I better actually add a Mother Gothel tag to the blog now!

Here's Mother Gothel, from a moment in the reprise of Mother Knows Best. Head's too big, and the shading isn't quite right, and I wantssss colours, but for a quick sketch off the laptop screen, shaded in charcoal (which was all I had handy as I can't use ArtRage right now). I remembered to resharpen it a lot! So only really mucked up a few bits :D

But at least it looks like her.

I might actually have to go see Tangled, just for Mother Gothel (otherwise I'd stay far away from the empty headed silliness).

Dear Mother Gothel Cosplayers

I was rather thrilled to discover someone making a Mother Gothel costume on DeviantART and actually linking to my Mother Gothel page as her reference resource page. I was also slightly horrified.

I am NOT a cosplayer, and the last time I sewed was an attempt to make my brother a stuffed unicorn out of old curtains when I was ten.( I found it half-finished, thirteen years later. Last week. When doing a mass clear-out of the last few piles of things in my room, after which my dad knocked down the entire wall (he originally put it up - I had to sleep in the living room for my first month in that house!, and now they're renovating) ... uh, I've long since moved out, to clarify).

My costume analysis of Mother Gothel mainly comes from when I decided to draw her (in order to have some of my own art on the lens - I have a Thing about that :D ) - and therefore had to actually look at all the details (and decide if I could be bothered drawing the dagger, and how to best mimic the brocade without bothering to draw the actual pattern and if it should be shiny, and what colour her eyes really are, and so on).

This means that this costume description comes from the perspective of an artist, not a costumer. I've attempted to provide ideas and resources to help people get started - and more than enough to throw together a home made Halloween costume, but I do not delude myself into thinking that page is anywhere NEAR detailed enough for a serious cosplayer*

I know a little about dress patterns, wigs, and fabrics, but only what internet research will give you (I research stuff to death when I'm on a roll, but this kind of thing needs actual practical experience). Over time, as people actually create cosplays of Gothel, I'll have more information to draw on, but if you know something about this, then please:

*(... an example which IS, is my friend Bria's Rapunzel analysis - yeah, it's her fault I ever heard of Tangled, but I got her onto Squidoo, so it's probably self-inflicted. I do not like Rapunzel (PINK and airheaded and seriously ditzy - I do like the short-haired version at the end though) which may be partly why I am so fond of Mother Gothel.)

Rapunzel's Revenge and other Rapunzel Links

You all know the story of Rapunzel, I hope? Well, did you ever think about making a lasso out of all that hair? Or reins for a wild warthog? Then you might want to check out the graphic novel, Rapunzel's Revenge.

Rapunzel's Revenge is a whip-cracking lively and colourful graphic novel that takes the old passive princess in a tower and throws her away in favour of a fiery, moral and stubborn redhead who gets out of her tower and goes to save the world from evil Mother Gothel. It's one of my favourites out of the various books retelling Rapunzel.

If you like the Rapunzel fairytale, you may be interested in browsing the Rapunzel-related posters on this lens. They're mostly from Zazzle - Rapunzel herself, Mother Gothel, and her tower - but there's some on Amazon for the new Tangled movie already.

Lastly, if you're actually interested in Tangled, and/or cosplay, Bria Silivren has written up an analysis of Rapunzel's costume complete with giant pictures from the upcoming Disney film. Bria's a semi-professional (...she doesn't make any money at it!) cosplayer who's already made one of the previewed (and, I think, rejected) costumes from the film (photo on left) and I strongly suspect is gathering pink silks and researching blonde wigs already for a second run.
